"Full Circle" One person Show
This 5 year retrospective includes Plein Air paintings
I have created on location throughout the Pacific NW
in recent years. We live in a beautiful part of the world.
I hope these images will remind the viewers of our good
fortune and our legacy to protect the natural environment.
May these paintings bring joy to all who view them.
All are available for purchase...contact: [email protected]
20% of all sales during the rest of 2020 will also go to your choice:
Black Lives Matter, The Red Cross Firefighters Relief Fund and to
The Oregon Food Bank to assist families in need at the end of this
difficult year especially. Please consider giving the gift of art and
be a part of the healing we all need to share with our neighbors...
Sincere thanks
Nancy Smith Klos

Seascapes-En Plein Aire
I often paint at the ocean along the west coast.
For three years in Fall I had a Residency in
Neskowin, Oregon. I lived, showed and managed the
Hawk Creek Gallery while the owner traveled after the
summer season. This allowed me 24/7 access to a very
wild part of the Oregon Coast-just North of Cascade Head.
One of thing that distinguished the Oregon Coast from
Washington and California is the fact that it is considered
public land. There is access to the Oregon beaches the length
of this state where I have lived for 38 years in Portland, Oregon.

Portraits of TREES
After spending some time this weekend painting Cedars
I realized that over time I have often painted Portraits of Trees
in various locations En Plein Air around the PNW, California,
New Mexico, in and around Portland where I have lived since
1985. Their presence and history tell amazing stories and give
a sense of place that changes with the seasons.
I decided these specific portraits needed a Collection Category
all their own...just as a single tree sometimes deserves to be
painted as a single subject!

Cityscapes
One of my favorite subjects to paint is in the local
open Air Markets in Portland and wherever I may
be visiting. City Parks also offer lots to paint. The
buzz of people passing by, shopping for fresh foods
from the local farmers, picking flowers in a farm field
provides perfect company for me as I paint these scenes.
I am always so glad when the warm weather comes.
Typically I am out early to catch the morning light!

Sun, Moon & Stars...
To witness the Totality last year had a profound effect on
my art...although for years I have painted images and colors
of the Moon, Sun and Stars. Sometimes painting the Enzo
is the best way to focus on what is truly important in life...

Portraits of Flowers
I often enjoy treating a flower as if I was painting a
person's face. To isolate the beauty of a single form,
or perhaps a few of them as they relate to each other
is a very different way of painting them in a garden.

NW WATERFALLS
This series I decided to paint after the major fires in the
Columbia River Gorge in 2017. Last year in late summer
it was possible to visit the falls east and west of the famous
Multnomah Falls on the old highway. Painting this series
was very healing for me. The visitors who were coming through
felt the same way. People from all over the world were back to
photograph, hike and just enjoy feeling the spray of the fresh
mountain waters falling down the hills. Over a period of weeks
I painted here in this protected area...this summer I finally wrote
my article which appeared in OutDoor Painters Magazine. See
my home page for the link to my article:

Nocturnes and Sunsets-from life and photographs.
I am developing a series of Nocturnes-paintings done from
twilight. I have also done a series of sunsets at the time of evening
when it becomes difficult to define the horizon from the sun, water
and/or shore...

Portraits and Figurative works
Commissions are always welcome here...
I draw and paint from models in studio settings,
work from photographs and create self portraits
in my own studio Atelier NAN. Photographs of family
members, studio models (nudes & character models)
people I see when I am out painting En Plein Air
have inspired these pieces.

Sumi-E paintings in ink and mixed media
I have studied Chinese Sumi-E with several teachers
over the past three years. I currently use these techniques
in my oil and acrylic paintings. Sometimes I paint with
Sumi-e directly on paper with ink and mixed media such
as water color, gouache, acrylics and colored inks. I often
use metallics of all kinds to accent the details of the subjects I paint.
